PostSubject: What this board is, and what it is not.   Sat Nov 28, 2009 12:42 am

I've noticed a trend of people more or less spamming the forums using anonymous accounts to dump links. I've removed most of them already, but I thought I'd put out a notice on the forums about it. Not wanting to overstep my boundaries, I decided to check with you first.

Here is what I have so far:

I've noticed a rather distressing trend as of late; people visiting the site for a few moments, dropping in, leaving a comment about their series, and never being heard from again. I'm an optimistic person, so I'll assume that most of these people are doing it because they don't know what is expected, rather than them just being jackholes.

So, to outline it for everyone:

Things This Forum Is:

1. A place to meet other abridgers, or fans of abridgers.

2. A place for rookies to gain advice from more knowledgeable abridgers.

3. A place to, for lack of a better word, network.

4. A place to discuss various abridged series.

5. A place to promote your own abridged series(I'll get more into this later).

6. A place to look for partners, writers, editors and voice actors.

7. A place to show off AMVs, voice acting work, and other projects.

8. A place to have fun.

9. Most importantly, this is a fan community. Ideally, everyone here should have a common interest. That is not to say that everything revolves around abridging. People here are free, nay, encouraged, to talk about other things, i.e., anime, video games, children's trading cards. There are forums for that. More or less, this is a catch-all rule.

Things This Forum Is Not:

1. A place to drop links.

2. A place to flame or harass people.

The good thing is, the second list is shorter. You have much more freedom here than most fan communities. The admin team here won't interfere in any discussion so long as you respect the above mentioned qualities.

There is a difference, however, in using the forum to promote your series, and using the forum to dump a link to your series hoping that someone sees it. Dropping a link is more or less spamming the forums, and that is not acceptable. It will be deleted, as I've done to various anons that tried it.

Thank you.

Truthordeal.

Honestly, Truth, I visit this board several times a week.

The only reason I rarely talk is cause... well.... no one else is.

1Kids, as embarrassing as it is to say, you're probably one of the most active members here. This was by no means directed at you.

This was directed more at people who have been abusing the Abridger's Roll Call forum. They'd post a link and advertise without even registering. One was for Karin Abridged, I remember, but I deleted the rest of them. I'm merely taking preventative measures at this point.

Well hopefully this works.

Honestly, we need more traffic on the site before it'll become a major forum... and even then...

Look at Box of Danger's forums. They're a real big series and their forum is, while active, not too much so.

In order to get the traffic here that is intended, you'd have to get several MAJOR abridged series to place their home here, and redirect their traffic. YGOTAS, DBZA, and PTAS already have their own, and I'm sure many others do too.

So now, the best idea is to improve the other parts of the site. Expand it. Make it the ultimate abridging website. Info on how to abridge, styles of abridging, an abridging encyclopedia.... something like that.

Just my thoughts.

That's a great idea. I'll actually get something started tomorrow.

That idea in particular is being done by the Abridged Wikia.

But it would be good to have the basics down.

If you want people of all places to come here, it needs to be Abridged Series central. A place where YGOTAS and DBZA fanboys alike can find what they need, stuff that they can't get to on the other sites.

And convenience. Everything has to be neatly organized.

Those Abridger profiles are great ideas. Start filling out the profiles of the bigger abridgers... make the profiles look professional, even ask around and see if you can get the abridger themself to make some stuff up for their description, or submit a picture.

Another idea could possibly be an abridged links browser... where you have a sidebar with a whole lot of abridging links that will make the rest of your screen (upon click) visit those pages. Kinda like exploring files in Windows, only better.

Anyways, I'm out for a couple hours, cya later.

The site itself has an extensive list of over 100 series, YGOTAS and DBZA included. As for making profiles of the unique abridgers, that shouldn't be too hard as we can steal get some information from the Abridged Wikia.

I'm not sure what you mean by browser though; do you mean something like the affiliations page on the TAC site expanded to most of the site? Or am I missing the point here? Either way, it seems like a good idea, although it would need some hardcoding.

I also had the idea to contact one of the guys in charge of The Abridgist, and see if we can republish some of their How-To articles here. That, and try to get a few others to join specifically to write a How-To article here and there.

Y'all's thoughts?

I dunno, it seems like the Abridgist stopped.

Rather than trying to get in touch with HBI2K (which is nearly impossible), just post links to them.

If you guys wanted to do articles about abridging though (like what the Abridgist was doing), I'd totally be willing to lend my abilities (or lack thereof) to it.
